The old trams around town have a “ledge” in the back of each car. I’m not sure if this is a heater or part of the engine or what, but it’s pretty narrow and not really for sitting on, but if you’re short like me you can just get your entire body wedged up onto the shelf and then keep yourself there by holding the back handrail. I like sitting on this ledge when there aren’t many people on the tram as it gives me an unobstructed view of where I’ve been.
Last night I was on the number 7 heading home in the darkness when the tram had to stop temporarily due to road construction. As I was sitting there on my ledge, a fine mist of water suddenly settled over me and I looked around to see that one of the windows high up was open. When I looked out the back window I saw a bunch of Italian construction workers, one of them with a hose and a fine tipped nozzle, who had just sprayed water in through the tram window. I stuck my tongue out at him, and which point he sprayed the entire back of the tram while his construction worker friends laughed. I waved out the back window as my tram pulled out. They all waved back and we continued on our way.
Flirty Italians. What can you do except flirt back?
I’m off to Chamonix now. I’ll write again hopefully tomorrow if there is internet access.
