You guys have me writing everywhere now. I’m writing at home, at work, on the train, at the airport, in the park, on the toi- ok maybe that’s where I draw the line. I guess this is a good thing. I believe in my writing, but like everything else in my life, I’m self-conscious about it. Half the time I get writer’s block it has nothing to do with lack of ideas and everything to do with it not coming out perfectly when I write it down. I used to be of the mind where every sentence has to be a masterpiece or I couldn’t possibly show it to the public (as you can see, my standards have gone down a lot, heh).
Most importantly though, writing is like every other creative endeavor, and the more I do it the more I believe this statement – you get better the more you practice. Bee once said to me that it took her forever to write her blog entries when she was in Japan. She seemed to think that I was somehow more efficient, but when I admitted that I’m not, she was a little surprised. Maybe I’ll get more efficient with time, but as of right now I don’t write nearly enough to be that productive.
I’ve restarted my book again. Now, I am fully aware it’s a bad idea to tell everyone I’m writing the book again, because that almost ensures that I’ll spend all my time talking about writing the book and no time actually writing it. But to prove that I’m getting at least a bit more efficient, I managed to write 3,100 words in four hours a few days ago, which is my best record yet. Bee’s been asking for a chapter for three years now, so maybe she has a chance of getting one before I have to move back to the U.S.
On this endeavor I would say it is the completion of the task that has more value then the product of the task’s completion.
Complete the task first. Then turn it into a masterpiece as the next project.
Ideals should be things we can always work towards promptly replaced by still higher standards married to low expectations.
I love that you are writing so many entries. It is always a nice escape to read about your adventures and see all the amazing places you are going to.
